SHIRAGAWAGO THACTHED HOUSES TRIBES

  • Shirakawa-go

The Ogimachi area of Shirakawa-go is famous for its gassho-zukuri style houses. Villages with unique landscapes including Shirakawa-go and Gokayama were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1995 under the name "Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama". Shirakawa-go is located at the foot of Hakusan Mountain in the northwest of Gifu Prefecture. It is a quiet mountain village surrounded by mountains, criss-cross paddy fields and rivers. In the field museum "Gassho-zukuri Minkaen", 25 "Gassho-zukuri" style houses that were used in various parts of Shirakawa-go were relocated and preserved here. In the park, there are temples, waterwheel huts, charcoal burning huts, stalls and other buildings according to the appearance of ancient villages. There are performances of traditional crafts such as dyeing and weaving, and visitors can experience it for themselves here. At the Soba Noodle Dojo, you can experience making Japanese soba noodles. In autumn, the Doburoku festival is held, during which tourists are treated amazake mixed with rice. In Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine, one of the venues, there is an amazake festival hall, and the lion dance held at the festival is introduced using puppet models. Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck is an excellent place to overlook the scenery of the village.

  • Takayama

Takayama City is a "Jōkamachi" (a castle town, a town that developed around the residence of the vassals) of Takayama Castle built in the 16th century. The entire Takayama City is dominated by wooden buildings. Exquisite carpentry craftsmanship makes the entire Takayama City quaint. Since ancient times, Hida woodcarving technology has ranked first in the country. Hida carpenters have also been recruited as Japanese royal buildings to build palace houses, and most of the temples in Nara and Kyoto are also made by Hida craftsmen. These traditional crafts are still enduring and are the essence of craftsmanship throughout Japan. Many streets in Takayama still maintain an ancient and elegant atmosphere. Many historic sites are worth visiting in depth. Temples, shrines, and river bridges all have the charm of Kyoto, and in some respects, even Kyoto can't match it.

  • Hida Takayama Old Town

Antique Hida Takayama still retains the ancient streetscape. It is an elegant and quiet town with clean streets, full of charm and nostalgic style, hot springs, mountain views, delicious ramen and Hida beef, and is known as Little Kyoto, always attracting many tourists. Many people know Hida Takayama because of the animated movie "Your Name". However, Hida Takayama, a paradise hidden in the mountains, has always been loved by travelers. Especially the famous Kamisannomachi Old Street, which is fun and full of delicious food. You must try 5A beef sushi when you come here.
